Do you feel weighed down by the past?

Do you feel something from the past is holding you back? Are you constantly reliving upsetting memories? Maybe you feel stuck and are tired of feeling on edge, waiting for the next bad thing to happen. You wish you didn't feel so overwhelmed, numb and disconnected, but don't know how to set yourself free from feeling like this. Perhaps you have also been for talking therapy before and didn’t experience the changes you were hoping for.

Your amazing brain has the ability to heal, but when it has experienced a trauma, it often struggles with fully processing and healing is interrupted.

Traumas and long-term anxiety and depression can often leave you stuck replaying upsetting memories and "on a loop". EMDR Therapy goes beyond traditional talking therapies by harnessing the brain and body's innate abilities to heal themselves so you can recover and move forward in the present.

Signs that EMDR might be right for you.

Trauma affects people in many different ways, impacting mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing including the following common signs and symptoms:

  • Emotional distress such as flashbacks, nightmares, intense anxiety, panic attacks, and/or depression

  • Avoiding situations or people that remind you of the trauma, irritability, feeling on edge and being easily startled.

  • Fatigue, insomnia, and unexplained pains and physical symptoms such as stomachaches and muscle tension.

  • Memory problems, holding negative beliefs about yourself, others or the world, and other cognitive patterns such as catastrophizing.

If you recognize any of the above in yourself or someone you know, you are not alone - these are very common and natural responses to trauma. EMDR therapy provides a safe and supportive path for both adults and children to find relief and healing, freeing you to truly live in the present.

EMDR CAN HELP

EMDR help your brain let go of traumatic loops, which allows you to begin the healing process.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy designed to reduce the impact of painful memories and experiences. By using guided eye movements or tapping, EMDR helps bridge both sides of the brain to desensitize emotions, and help the brain re-process and consolidate fragments of memories in a healthier way.

EMDR helps break the "loops" of unresolved emotions, allowing you to sit with and work through the impacts of your past. Those experiences begin to lose their grip on you, empowering you to move forward and respond differently in the present.

One of the best aspects of EMDR is that it allows you to heal without having to rehash the details of what you've been through - you can share as little or as much as you like. Moreover, we have a range of state-of-the-art bilateral stimulation techniques to choose from including a light bar, tappers, light up drumsticks, fidgets, and coloured floor tiles.

EMDR for Children & Adolescents

At A New Hope Therapy Center, we are proud to have specially-trained therapists who can adapt EMDR to meet specific needs and developmental stages of children and adolescents. For example, the sandtray or pictures may be used instead of words, or a story written, if the child is struggling to talk directly about the trauma.

EMDR is well recognised as an effective therapy for children and adolescents who have experienced traumatic events. Opposite is a useful animation for explaining EMDR to children & adolescents.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does EMDR work and what does eye movement mean? Part of EMDR Therapy includes activating both hemispheres of your brain. This is done through two methods - you watching a light or your therapist's hand moving side to side or through "tapping" in which your therapist will tap your knee. You and your therapist will talk about the methods that you are most comfortable with.

What can I expect in an EMDR session? In EMDR sessions, you’ll be guided through reprocessing specific traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or taps. Sessions start with an assessment, include identifying target memories, and finish with grounding exercises to ensure you feel safe and supported.

Can EMDR sessions take place online? Absolutely! We believe therapy should be accessible and convenient, and we are delighted to offer EMDR from your phone, tablet or computer. In online EMDR sessions, we have the options of using manual tapping or web-based light bar for bilateral stimulation. Get in touch with us if you would like to find out more.

Where can I find out more information about EMDR Therapy? The EMDR International Association has a lot of good information and additional resources here.
